Fortnite has taken the world by storm. It now has around 250 million players making it one of the most popular games of all time. The game has also spawned all manner of merch and viral dance moves so you’d have to be living under a rock not to have heard about it. If you’ve been wondering what all the fuss is about and would like to jump in and give it a whirl yourself here are a few tips to get you started.
Fortnite Battle Royale is free and available on Playstation 4, Xbox One, PC, Mac, Nintendo Switch, iOS and some Android devices as well. To install the game you will need to search for it on your device’s app store.
To get started you will need to download and install it to create an account. Once you’ve created your account by filling in your name, display name, email address and password, you will be able to select a game option. You will have the following to choose from:
- Solo — 100 players fight each other.
- Duo — You and a teammate versus 49 other teams.
- Squads — You and three teammates versus 24 other teams.
- “Soaring 50s” — You with 49 other players battle 50 other players.
To start off, select Solo to join the 100 person battle royale. Your game will then load and you will spawn into Spawn Island and wait until the game fills up with 100 players. There’s no need to pick up any of the guns, ammo and materials on Spawn Island as you won’t able to take them with you once the game actually begins.
You will then board the Battle Bus which will fly over the map. Players then skydive off the bus to a starting point of their choice. It’s recommended that you wait for as long as possible to jump so that you can get away from the masses that jump first.
Armed only with your pickaxe you will then be able to start collecting guns, ammo and other resources. If possible, try to pick up a shotgun as they are the most effective at close range. If you can’t find your preferred weapon of choice, grab whatever you can because you can always switch it out later.
After three minutes, a storm will begin to grow on the outskirts of the map. The storm shrinks the playable area and will kill you if you stay in it long enough. Keep an eye on it and avoid it at all costs.
It’s a good idea to play with headphones on so that you aren’t taken by surprise. Players are able to hear one another’s movements and actions in-game, so being able to know which direction players are coming from will give you valuable seconds to prepare. Even though your initial kneejerk reaction will be to run around flailing, crouching will help you move more quietly.
A vitally important skill that you will need in order to stay alive for as long as possible in Fortnite is building. To do this you will need to collect wood, bricks and metal. These resources can be found in treasure chests and by using your pickaxe to chop down trees, buildings, rocks and vehicles.
You will also need to take care of your health by collecting shield items, bandages, medkits and potions. Take care to be as organized as possible with your inventory.
Practice makes perfect
Your objective is to be the last person standing and the reality is that you will die A LOT – especially in the beginning when you’re getting a feel for the game and learning how to play. When you die, you can go back go the lobby and start a brand new game.
If you don’t choose to go back to the lobby immediately when you die you will be able to watch the gameplay of the player who killed you. Watch what they do to learn how to improve your game. Rinse and repeat until you finally get the hang of it.
