Smart ways to find a job

Tried and true tips for success and efficiency in job-hunting

Finding a job can be incredibly stressful and time-consuming. It isn’t easy and can often feel like a full-time job in itself. Here are a few tried and true tips for success and efficiency in job-hunting.

Get creative with your CV

When putting your CV together, get creative. Companies see the same impersonal CV’s over and over again. Make standing out from the crowd your goal. Putting extra effort into your CV will show that you are serious about the job and will also show what kind of employee you are.

Network

One of the best and easiest ways to find a job is to know people. Ask friends, family and former colleagues if they’ve heard of anything or whether they can recommend you.

The direct route

Don’t only focus on the obvious channels of looking for a job such as through job listings. Focus on specific companies. Find out if they’re hiring and send your CV to them. You never know what might come up in the future and your CV might be impressive enough for them to consider hiring you regardless of whether they’ve advertised for open positions.

The interview process

Practice and roleplay interview answers and situations until you feel so confident of anything that comes your way during an interview. Going in to an interview properly prepared will go a long way with a future employer. Do as much research as possible on the company and position you’re being interviewed for.

Internships

Paid internships are actually really common these days and are a great way for you to gain skills and experience, and get your foot in the door. Internships are also fantastic for making new contacts in your chosen field.

Put your entrepreneurial hat on

If your hunt for a job isn’t going well, consider creating a job of your own. Take your passion and talent and put it into something that can begin earning you money in a way that makes you feel fulfilled and happy.

It’s important not to get too disheartened by rejection. Maintain your confidence and know that if things don’t pan out with a specific company it obviously wasn’t meant to be. Pick yourself up, move on and keep searching for the job that’s right for you!
