Tools and languages for aspiring web developers

Web development is a hot industry at the moment. Businesses and organisations worldwide are looking to improve their websites, update their features and offer their clients the best possible online experience. These functions are the responsibility of web developers.

The biggest websites, including Facebook, Netflix and Amazon, have been carefully developed and improved by teams of programmers and designers over the years. Each developer specialises in a set of coding languages or software that allows them to build a fully-functioning website or standalone feature.

There are a variety of online courses, both free and paid, that can teach you about different coding languages and how to use various web-building software. Here are some of the basic tools that aspiring web developers should know and master:

Bootstrap is a free and open-source front-end framework for designing websites and apps. It is a great way to combine your JavaScript, HTML and CSS coding skills into one functioning site.

Bootstrap offers a library of plugins, prototyping tools and components that allow you to build a responsive website or app. It also allows you to optimise your websites for mobile with ease.

Many top-end websites and brands around the world use Bootstrap for their web development programmes and projects.

C is a general-purpose programming language that is used widely by all web developers. It uses structured language and allows for word variation and recursion. C has been around for ages (since the late 1960s) and is one of the most useful languages a web developer can learn.

Even modern operating systems use C and it’s newer variants (such as C++) because it is so widely recognised by computers and other codes. Many popular programming languages can interact with C, making it a sort of common language in web development.

Java is another general-purpose programming language that is class-based and object-orientated. It was designed to have as few implementation dependencies as possible, making it a nimble and versatile language.

Traditionally, Java was used for client-server web applications, but more recently it has become a cornerstone for Android developers and app creators.

Not to be confused with Java, JavaScript is a foundational code of most websites. It is found everywhere and is used to run interactive content on websites. Nearly every web browser has a built-in engine that runs JavaScript on websites.

You may often find that your website needs to update its JavaScript to run certain animations on websites that have just been released. JavaScript is not only used on websites, but it is also programmed into servers, databases, word processors and PDF software as well.

Python is another general-purpose programming language. It is easier and more straightforward than JavaScript, making it a great starting point for aspiring web developers. Once you master Python, you will find JavaScript easier to understand and code.

Python was designed to be easily-readable as it makes use of a lot of white space in the code. It’s also used by data analysts, artificial intelligence specialists and game designers. Python is the preferred language for most large businesses and websites, including Dropbox, Reddit and Spotify.

SQL (or Structured Query Language) is a programming language that is specific to each domain. It is used to manage and process data for websites and streaming services. Businesses are able to get insights from data for their websites by using SQL.

Web developers can create relational databases for websites with SQL, as well as manage these databases and communicate with them. Large websites such as YouTube and Wikipedia use SQL to manage its massive databases and ensure the websites function properly.

If you want to start a career in web development, these tools and language will form a solid foundation from which you can expand your knowledge. New technology and coding languages are changing the way websites and apps work, so start with the basics and learn the more complicated languages as you progress.
