1. Suzuki S-Presso

The Suzuki S-Presso was launched in 2020 and is one of the most affordable new cars on the market, starting at just R149 900. The design of the vehicles resembles a small SUV cross between a nimble city runner. It is perfect for a small family and is light on fuel, with a 1.0-litre petrol powerplant. Customers can choose between a five-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission. 

2. Baic D20

Baic is a newcomer to the South African market. The Chinese brand has only been in the country for four years. The D20 hatchback, which starts at R149 990, is powered by a 1.3-litre petrol engine producing 75kW. A 1.5-litre, 85kW engine is available for an additional R20 000. Buyers can choose between a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic transmission.

3. Suzuki Celerio

Suzuki is becoming a popular choice for bargain car hunters. The original Celerio was introduced in 2015 but the same features remain of this latest iteration. The car has an economical three-cylinder, 1.0-litre petrol engine that puts out 50kW. There are two choices of transmission; a five-speed manual or an automatic. The Celerio 1.0 GA starts at R153 900 and the slightly larger Celerio 1.0 GL will cost R171 900.

4. Mahindra KUV100 NXT

Mahindra, a popular Indian brand in the industry, has competitive cars at affordable prices. The Mahindra KUV100 NXT is not only stylish but is also a six seater compact SUV, which starts at R155 000. It has a three-cylinder, 1.2-litre engine that generates 61kW. This vehicle also has necessary safety features, such as airbags, anti-locking braking system (ABS) and electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), which makes this vehicle not only affordable but very safe too. 

5. Renault Kwid

The Renault Kwid is expected to be a popular seller because of its trendy, modern looks and affordable price. It is the best-selling Renault in the country at the moment and starts at R162 900. It has a 1.0-litre petrol engine with three-cylinders and generates 50kW. This compact car can be purchased with either a five-speed manual or an automatic manual transmission (AMT). The Kwid also has key safety features such as airbags and ABS. 

These are five of the country’s most affordable cars and are perfect for first-time drivers, economical city runners, students and the elderly. These vehicles are ideal because of their low price and economical running costs, as one does not have to spend a lot of money to get the most out of the cars.
