The massively popular trading card game, Magic: The Gathering, is one you may have seen friends or family members playing or heard talking about. Getting started may seem a little daunting at first. The game dates back to 1993, there are literally thousands of cards available and seemingly cryptic rules and language related to the game but getting started is easy once you know how.
There are a few ways to begin. If you’re just looking to play casually at home you can start off by buying a preconstructed deck. These are decks that you can take out of the box and start playing immediately.
Ways to buy:
Planeswalker Decks
Planeswalker decks are targeted towards new players just getting started. They come with a preconstructed 60-card deck, a premium foil Planeswalker card and two boosters.
Commander Decks
Commander packs come with a 100-card deck, tokens and foil, mythic-rare commander cards. Commander decks are slightly more advanced than the Planeswalker decks.
Duel Decks
A Duel Deck pack comes with 2 preconstructed decks that are equally balanced and designed to be taken out of the box and played against each other.
Challenger Decks
Challenger Decks are 75-card preconstructed decks that come with a spindown life counter, a quick reference guide and a deck box.
Ways to play:
You can, of course, choose to play in the comfort of your own home with friends or family. Magic: The Gathering is suited to both introverts and extroverts.
Friday Night Magic
To get involved in the community of Magic: The Gathering players, start playing in tournaments and really get to know the game you should head to your local game store and sign up for Friday Night Magic, which are casual and inclusive events that allow you to learn as you go.
Prerelease Events
Prerelease tournaments are a great way to get started in the world of Magic: The Gathering once you at least have the basics down. A prerelease tournament is a sealed event which means that you will receive a prerelease pack which contains 6 boosters from which you will have to build a 40-card deck, a spindown life counter and a premium promo card. You will then be drafted and play against other people until you are knocked out. Prereleases are loads of fun and gives you the chance to win prizes and meet fellow geeks.
Happy playing!
