Since Elon Musk acquired Twitter in October 2022, the media company has undergone a number of changes. From reducing the workforce by approximately 80% to reinstating previously banned accounts, Musk has done a lot to shake up Twitter.
As of 24 July 2023, Twitter is no more! The app will rebrand and become known simply as X. A new look and feel to the app along with several other changes will give the social media platform a refresh. Whether you love it or hate it when social platforms change things, this major rebrand has been coming for some time.
After Musk’s takeover of Twitter, Donald Trump was given back his Twitter account and Musk recently tweeted that all presidential candidates are welcome on the platform. Several months down the line, the changes Musk made are impacting what people see on the platform and how they interact with it.
Musk has claimed that he wants to transform Twitter into an all-inclusive app that people can use to make payments, keep up with the latest news and even order food. He aims to turn Twitter into a so-called “everything app” similar to the popular Chinese app, WeChat.
Musk is rebranding Twitter
There’s much speculation that Twitter has merged with Musk’s shell company called X Corp. This merger means that Twitter no longer exists, at least not in its previously existing form. The implications of this change, however, are not fully clear.
Any Media company that contacts Twitter for comment receives email with a poop emoji – ???? – in response. This automated response was put into practice when Musk took over ownership of the social media platform. One thing that does seem likely is the transformation of Twitter into an all-purpose platform.
Mask intends to turn Twitter into a payment gateway that rivals PayPal. He believes that he can propel this social media platform into one of the world’s biggest financial institutions. From banking payments to app-driven activities, Musk has huge ambitions for the future of Twitter.
Twitter to become X
Since the late ’90s, Musk has had a keen interest in x.com. He launched the site as an online banking startup but handed over control when it merged with a rival company called Confinity in 2000. It was then that Musk created PayPal, which launched him into financial success and international fame. In 2017, Musk purchased the x.com domain once again and this year has been taking action to revive his ambitions for it.
The Twitter rebrand is very much based on the WeChat model in China. This super app does everything from providing messaging services to home delivery and financial transactions. By expanding and rebranding, Twitter could compete with its social media rival Meta and attract billions of new users all over the world.
