Many of us tend to forget about lawn care in the winter months, but just because there is usually enough rain to keep it growing doesn’t mean you should abandon it altogether. Here are a few tips to keep your lawn lush and healthy in preparation for spring.
Aerate your lawn
Aerating your soil alleviates compaction and allows air, water and nutrients to enter the soil and penetrate grass roots. To aerate your soil, you will need a spike or plug aerator to poke holes into the ground. It’s important to focus more heavily on areas of the lawn that get a lot of foot traffic.
Fertilize your lawn
At the beginning of winter, it’s always a good idea to fertilize your lawn in order to give it any nutrients that may be lacking in the soil after the summer. Opt for a fertilizer that is high in phosphate, as opposed to nitrogen, as this will encourage root development. This will ensure that your lawn’s roots stay fed and healthy all winter long.
You can also add a few earthworms to your lawn to help strengthen your soil structure and improve the nutrients in your soil.
Don’t give up on mowing
Even though you can see your grass growing wildly from the rain, it’s still vital that you mow it whenever a dry, warmer day rolls around. You’ll want to avoid any animals such as field mice taking advantage of the long grass.
Tall grass won’t allow your lawn to breathe and you will end up with dead grass if you wait until the spring to mow. Keeping your lawn freshly mowed as much as possible will ensure new growth going into the warmer months. Keep in mind not to cut your lawn too short as it will encourage weeds to grow and bare patches to form.
Keep off the grass!
To keep your lawn as healthy as possible during winter, you should allow it to rest as much as possible by limiting the amount of foot traffic on it. It is also absolutely essential that you don’t park your car on the lawn in winter as it’s even more vulnerable to damage.
Rake up leaves
It’s important to make sure that your lawn can breathe by regularly removing any leaves that pile up. The same goes for any debris and items that may blow out onto the grass such as toys, outdoor furniture and branches.
Weeding
Weeds steal the nutrients from your grass roots so, while it isn’t the most pleasant task, you should always keep on top of weeding if you truly care about the health of your lawn. The old-fashioned way of pulling weeds up by hand is the best way to go. Just make sure that you remove the roots of the weeds.
