Composting is a great way to help you reduce and recycle your kitchen waste. Here are a few ways to help get you started and a list of several things you should compost.
First things first, you will want to buy a decent compost bin at your local nursery.
Here is a list of things that you can compost:
- Fruit and vegetable scraps
- Crushed egg shells
- Cut up cardboard egg cartons
- Coffee grounds
- Coffee filters
- Tea bags
- Used paper napkins and paper towels
- Bread crumbs
- Cooked pasta and rice
- Chopped up avocado pits
- Toothpicks
- Paper cupcake cups
- Used tissues
- Hair
- Fur
- Newspaper
- Dry dog/cat food
- Shredded toilet paper rolls
- Nail clippings
- Cotton balls
- Leaves
- Grass clippings
- Used matches
- Stale bread, pretzels, crackers, cereal and potato chips
- Nut shells
- Unpopped popcorn kernels
What not to compost
- Keep onions and garlic to a minimum as they repel earthworms which are a vital part of a healthy garden.
- Anything containing meat, oil, fat and grease
- Dog and cat poop
- Dairy products
Your ingredient mix needs to be just right. You need to have a combination of brown and green plant matter. The shredded newspaper and dry leaves are perfect for the brown elements and the kitchen waste and grass clippings are perfect for the green.
Sprinkle water over your compost pile regularly but make sure that you don’t use too much. You don’t want to drown the microorganisms.
You should also provide your pile with oxygen by stirring it with a garden fork once a week.
Once your compost becomes dry, brown and crumbly it’s ready for you to feed your soil.
