As the world of work evolves, so do the tools we utilise in the workplace. Google recently announced the launch of Bard, its artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot set to rival OpenAI’s highly successful ChatGPT. AI-enhanced search has become increasingly popular, leading to speculation about the role of AI in the future of work.
AI is already a key part of the workforce and able to complete a broad range of tasks. This is set to increase with major investment taking place. Google and OpenAI (which is backed by Microsoft) chatbots will be an integral part of the future of work, which will see extensive collaboration between human workers and AI.
The main players: Google and Microsoft
Google’s Bard and Microsoft-funded ChatGPT represent the latest advances in conversational AI. The two tech giants have developed models that can interact with users and perform various tasks. Soon after its launch, ChatGPT attracted 100 million active monthly users, making it the world’s fastest growing internet app. Google’s experimental AI is hot on its tail.
Bard is able to produce longer, more contextual responses, while ChatGPT provides shorter, more specific answers. Both models use large language models and deep learning algorithms to draw from a large pool of data and generate human-like responses to inputs. This technology has already impacted the way we work and will continue to do so.
AI chatbots in the workforce
AI chatbots are used in various industries and are expected to become even more popular. Businesses use them to improve efficiency and customer service. The future of work will see these programmes handling repetitive tasks, such as data entry, monthly invoicing, scheduling and even project management. According to a recent Forbes Insight study, 86% of companies adopting AI to improve customer experience are using chatbots for customer service.
Automation of more mundane tasks frees up human employees to focus on creative and complex challenges. This will increase workplace efficiency and morale. Chatbots can also work around the clock. These tools can complete repetitive tasks for long periods where human employees need breaks and may slow down over time.
As well as boosting efficiency, they can be used to enhance communication both amongst employees and with customers. Using natural language processing (NLP), chatbots are able to respond intelligently and accurately when asked questions.
The result is enhancement of communication both within the workplace and between customer and service provider. AI assistance in answering both customer and employee enquiries removes the need for a human representative to handle every inquiry individually.
What can’t AI do?
Whilst AI can play a large role in various areas of work, there are some aspects of human labour it cannot replace. It lacks the empathy, emotion and creative nuance of human workers. We will see an integration of AI tools within current work patterns, rather than wholesale replacement.
Take content writing as an example. A content creator can use AI writing tools to assist in research, planning and writing. However, the chatbot would be unable to produce a piece with the nuance, personality or detail of the human writer. Much editing is still needed to bring an AI-written article up to professional standards.
Google and OpenAI’s chatbots represent a key part of the future of work and have the capacity to revolutionise the way we collaborate. Whilst there are some areas that they can automate entirely, they can’t stand in for all aspects of human work. Large parts of daily tasks will be assisted by AI, rather than replaced entirely. How could AI assist you in your work?
