Nowadays, we simply can’t live without our multitude of various electronic devices. Apart from their monetary value, many of our gadgets contain so much of our personal information that it’s absolutely vital that them safe. We need to look after them as much as our money, passports and important travel documentation while travelling.
In the whirlwind of getting to your destination, keeping track of everything is not always an easy feat. Here are a few important tips on how to keep your tech safe while travelling and on holiday.
Travel insurance
Before any major trip, it’s essential to buy travel insurance that covers your electronics. It’s simply not worth the risk to travel without it.
Getting to your destination
Don’t skimp on good hand luggage. While travelling, you’ll want to keep all of your devices in a bag or small case that can hold everything – keeping it all safe and secure at the same time. When waiting at the airport, don’t let your luggage out of your sight. Even though many travellers leave their devices to charge unattended at charging stations, it’s definitely not recommended.
Make sure that you don’t get distracted while going through security checkpoints. Keep an eye on any devices that you have to remove from your bag for screening and place them back in your bag immediately after you have retrieved them on the other side.
On holiday

While on holiday, you should always lock up your devices in a safe if possible. If you want to take your camera or phone with you when heading out and about, it’s important that you keep them on you at all times and never leave them unattended.
In case your device does get lost or stolen, it’s a good idea to have an app installed that allows you to track it. On Android devices, make sure to activate the Android Device Manager so that you can remotely locate, lock or factory reset your device. If you are an Apple user, you can install the Find My iPhone app.
Your data
While travelling, its not only your hardware that you need to keep safe. You should also keep your personal data, such as passwords, usernames, credit card numbers and other private details secure.
An essential first line of defense is to ensure that all of your devices are password protected. If you do somehow leave your laptop or cellphone unattended, any potential thief will have a much harder time accessing your personal data if your device is password protected and has its auto-lock feature enabled.
You should also turn off your Bluetooth so that people can’t hack into your phone or laptop.
As convenient as it may be, whenever possible, it’s best to avoid free public Wi-Fi. Connect to password-protected secure networks that are offered at hotels and BnBs instead. Any information that you type in while using free WiFi is not secure.
Finally (just to be on the safe side), before leaving for your trip, a great precautionary measure is to back up all of your data to external hard drives or secondary devices.
