Gypsum board ceilings can be damaged by natural expansion and contraction of a building, or through other causes. Sooner or later, you are going to need to fix a cracked ceiling to prevent it from getting worse. Luckily, this can be an easy and cheap process. All you need is a few tools, jointing compound and to follow these steps:
Fixing cracks in the ceiling
The first step is to sand away any loose paint around the crack. You can either do this by hand or with an electric sander. Next, apply mesh tape over the crack so that it is fully covered.
Mix and place some jointing compound over the mesh, then spread and smooth it out with a trowel. Once the jointing compound has dried, sand it smooth again and apply a fresh coat of paint. If the repair looks different to the ceiling, the entire ceiling may need to be repainted in order to hide where the crack was and to give the ceiling a fresh and finished look.
How to repair large holes
Holes in the ceiling can occur from ladders or children playing in the house. These holes can affect the look and safety of a ceiling, which is why it is important to repair it. Start by cutting a rectangle around the damaged area, this doesn’t have to be much bigger than the hole itself. Then add some wooden cleats on either side of the top surface of the hole to give additional support.
Attach a patch piece over the cleats and the hole and place mesh tape over the patch piece. Spread jointing compound over the piece and once the first coat has dried, apply a second and third coat. Sand down the compound until it has a smooth finish and clean any dust with a damp rag. Finally prime and paint the ceiling to match.
These simple steps will allow anyone to repair cracks and holes in their plasterboard ceilings. This will not only improve the look of your home but also help to retain its market value should you wish to sell or move out at a later stage.
