The last thing anyone wants is to eat big, hearty meals in the summertime. Here are a few light, hydrating foods to eat in the heat.
When the temperatures start rising it’s best to switch up the food we eat in order to stay cool, hydrated, and healthy.
For meat eaters it’s best to stay away from meat that will take more energy to digest such as red meat. Fish is a great alternative. You’ll also want to supplement your dinners with plenty of fruit and vegetables.
It is best to avoid foods that are high in sugar and carbohydrates. Your main priority in summer is to stay hydrated and to replace your electrolytes after spending time in the sun. You can do this by drinking plenty of water, coconut milk, Energade and Powerade and eating foods such as cucumbers, dark greens, tomatoes, celery, yoghurt, watermelon, grapefruit, peaches and berries. You’ll also want to up your turmeric and mint intake. Try to limit your intake of sugary and alcoholic beverages. Alcohol will dehydrate you and increase your overall body temperature.
Eating big meals can make you feel like you’re overheating so it’s best to eat 4-6 small meals throughout the day.
Even though it’s the last thing you may want, spicy food is great to eat in summer. Even though it initially makes you feel hot, once you start sweating you will begin to start cooling down. Go for things like curry and Mexican food.
When it comes to cooking try to avoid baking and use your stove top instead. Ideally you’ll want to use your braai/barbecue as much as possible. Opt for meals that don’t require cooking at all such as delicious summer salads, sandwiches, and meat and cheese platters.
