We all have constant chatter in our minds and it’s extremely easy to believe that every thought that comes along is the absolute truth. This leads us to believe that our thoughts are something that we should identify with and take on. However, the key to inner peace is to not identify with every single thought that pops up in your mind. Here are some tips to help.
Surrender and acceptance
We can amplify our suffering as human beings by allowing our thoughts to completely dictate the narrative about our perception of our individual realities. Surrendering to, and the acceptance of, the present are the keys to stopping this suffering.
With a lot of practice, when you simply surrender and accept what is in every moment, without adding any interpretation, you are able to transcend your thinking and stop the chatter. When you stop thinking about yourself, your life, what went “wrong” and what could go “wrong” – essentially not adding any thoughts to your present moment and simply allowing yourself to be without labels, there is a profound sense of peace and relief.
This sense of peace in just being allows us to stop old tapes. The stories we tell ourselves no longer define us and we are no longer dissociate to cope. Instead of relying on external things and thoughts to identify ourselves, we simply reach a state of being without clutter and narrative and stories. We simply are.
Transcend compulsive thinking
Compulsive thinking can make our lives miserable, so when you transcend thought and peel away the layers, what you are left with is pure stillness. In this stillness, we have awareness, which is higher than thinking. We are suddenly able to be more alert than before. This alertness is incredibly important because without it, we slip back into unconsciously being consumed by our thoughts.
When we are alert in this stillness, we are able to truly perceive what’s going on around us without getting entangled in other things. We are able to become an observer and be more discerning. We are then able to use thinking as a tool for deeper creativity, learning and evolving, instead of being used by our thoughts.
It’s important to recognise when we are trying to distract ourselves from our thoughts, through things like drinking or getting lost in a video game or TV series. This doesn’t allow us to transcend our thoughts because, in this state, we can’t maintain a sense of awareness of the present moment. All this does is delay the process of finding authentic stillness and contentment.
