It is essential for your overall health to stay hydrated. Our various bodily systems can only function properly if we maintain a steady balance of water and electrolytes (such as sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium).
Drinking water or eating foods that contain a high percentage of water, such as fruits and vegetables, is the best approach to staying hydrated. Here are a few tips to ensure that your body has enough water and electrolytes throughout the day.
Drink more water
This is an obvious one. Many of us aren’t drinking as much water as we should in order to stay properly hydrated. Drink two glasses of water first thing in the morning, followed by one glass of water before each meal or snack.
To ward off dehydration, drink water gradually throughout the day by keeping a bottle next to you. To switch things up a bit, you can also flavour your water with things like lemon slices, strawberries or cucumbers.
Don’t put off drinking until you’re thirsty. You’re already slightly dehydrated by the time you feel thirsty. When the weather is hot, drink more water throughout the day than normal, especially if you’re active.
Eat your water
Fluid-rich foods like fruits and vegetables, which are 80 to 90 percent water, can help you fulfill up to 20 percent of your daily fluid needs. Watermelon, strawberries, cantaloupe, cucumber, celery, broccoli, cauliflower and spinach are just a few of the fruits and vegetables with the highest water content. Water makes up at least 90 percent of each of these fruits and vegetables.
Bananas are also especially beneficial, since they are high in potassium, which is depleted in the body as a result of dehydration. A banana can be consumed as a pre-workout snack to prevent dehydration. Water can also be found in dairy products such as milk, yoghurt and cottage cheese.
Stay cool
Staying hydrated is not just about drinking water; it’s also about regulating your body temperature. Wear a hat and light, loose-fitting clothing during the summer to avoid heat stroke and schedule strenuous sports or physical activities at cooler periods of the day.
Sunburn can raise your skin temperature, making it difficult to stay cool. So, be sure to apply plenty of sunscreen to avoid getting sunburned. This will also help to keep your body temperature low.
Caffeine and alcohol should be kept to a minimum
Caffeine and alcohol are both fine in moderation, but they can cause dehydration. After a cup of coffee in the morning or a glass of wine in the evening, make sure to rehydrate. Ideally, one glass of water should be consumed per cup of coffee or unit of alcohol.
